Most child-friendly town now home to Little Red School

Maitum, Sarangani is the home of the 79th LRS

Recognized three times for being the most child-friendly municipality in the region, Maitum in Mindanao’s Sarangani province easily became a hall of fame awardee for the said distinction last 2008. Maitum Mayor Elsie Lucille Perrett said that this would not have been possible if not for the people themselves who are dedicated to their work at improving the life of the community through the collective efforts of local government agencies like the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, the Municipal Health Office and the Department of Education District of Sarangani.

Rainwater harvesting for the poorest in Bohol

'The Coca-Cola global commitment to water stewardship includes supporting access to clean water and sanitation for communities'

Pablo Escaño, a resident of Brgy. Villa Milagrosa in Carlos P. Garcia (CPG) municipality in Bohol, recalls a time when because of scarce water supply, they had no choice but to cook rice with salt water. Despite the severity of the water problem in their community though, Escaño is still able to rib about the situation. “At least if we cooked rice with seawater, it would already have a taste,” he said.

Rainwater Brings Life to San Jose, Romblon

Rainwater Brings Life to San Jose, Romblon

The municipality of San Jose, located on Carabao Island, the southernmost tip of the province of Romblon, has clear blue waters and powder-fine white sandy beaches. Despite this idyllic setting, 61.8% of island’s population – approximately 5,300 people - do not have access to clean, potable water. The only option for households to procure water for their daily needs is to travel by pumpboat at 5am from San Jose to the mainland municipality of Santa Fe, and return by the only boat available for the day, at 10am.

Barkada is a group of friends – but not just ''a group of friends''. As with many Filipino words, it is difficult to translate barkada to a single English word - ''clique'' and ''gang'' come close, but do not quite capture the essence of barkada. Clique connotes exclusivity and snobbishness. Gang, in the informal sense, mimics barkada but lacks the lifelong bond that differentiates barkada from a mere social group. The best definition of barkada is probably ''family'', minus the pre-requisite blood relationship. Barkada is the group of peers that one is always comfortable with, knowing that he will be accepted no matter what.
